Occupational therapy at C.J. Allen Upper Extremity & Hand Therapy focuses on restoring practical function after injury or surgery to the hand, wrist, elbow or shoulder. Our Hauppauge clinic is the closest such practice to Islandia.

Functional Recovery After Surgery

Surgery repairs a structure. It does not, by itself, return a hand to use. The weeks after an operation determine whether you regain a hand that works normally or one that is technically healed but stiff, weak and avoided. Occupational therapy bridges that gap, progressing from protected motion through strength to genuine everyday use.

Rebuilding Real Tasks, Not Just Motion

We work on the specific activities you have lost. Buttoning a shirt requires fine pinch and sensation. Carrying groceries requires sustained grip and forearm endurance. Typing requires independent finger movement and tolerance for repetition. Each is trained deliberately, because improvement in one does not automatically produce improvement in another.

Areas We Address

  • Fine motor control — fastenings, coins, small tools, handwriting.
  • Grip and carry — bags, containers, everyday loads.
  • Self-care — dressing, grooming, bathing.
  • Kitchen and household tasks.
  • Computer and device use, including workstation setup.
  • Driving readiness and comfort.
  • Return to work and to hobbies.

Swelling, Scar and Sensation

Three things quietly determine post-surgical function. Persistent swelling blocks motion. Adherent scar tethers tendons that need to glide. Altered sensation makes a hand clumsy even when strong. Each responds well to early, consistent treatment and becomes considerably harder to address once established.

Custom Orthoses for Function

We fabricate splints on site, molded to your hand and adjusted as you progress. A functional orthosis supports what needs support while leaving the rest of the hand usable — the difference between a splint that helps and one that simply immobilizes.

Coordinating With Your Surgeon

We follow surgical protocols precisely, report progress back, and raise concerns early. Much of our caseload arrives by direct surgeon referral for exactly that reliability.

Your Goals Drive the Plan

At evaluation we ask what specifically you cannot do and want to. Those tasks become the measurable goals, which makes progress visible to you and keeps treatment anchored to something that matters rather than to numbers alone.

Returning to Driving

Driving is among the first things people want back and among the most commonly rushed. It requires enough grip to control the wheel under load, enough forearm rotation to check mirrors and reverse, and enough sensation to react without hesitation. We assess those specifically and give you a straight answer, because the risk is not only to you.

Computers, Phones and Workstation Setup

If your work involves a keyboard, how the workstation is arranged directly affects the tissue you are trying to heal. Monitor height, the chair and desk relationship, keyboard angle, mouse position and how often you break all change the load on a recovering wrist. We go through your actual setup rather than handing over generic ergonomic advice.

How Many Visits Will I Need?

Most conditions run six to eighteen visits, more frequent early and tapering as you take over the program yourself. Post-surgical cases follow the healing timeline and run longer. You get a realistic estimate at evaluation and honest revision if it changes.

Coordinating With Your Surgeon's Timeline

Every repair carries a protocol governing what the tissue may safely do at each stage, and functional work has to fit inside it. Gripping a cup is a reasonable goal at one point in a tendon repair and a genuinely bad idea at another. We work from your surgeon's protocol, so that the tasks we rebuild are ones your hand is actually ready for.
