We specialize in customizing upper extremity splints to address a wide range of conditions and needs. Our dedicated team is committed to providing personalized solutions that enhance comfort, support and function.
Types of Splints We Offer
- Protective Fracture Bracing — essential support and protection for fractures of the arm, wrist, hand and digits.
- Postoperative Immobilization Splinting — tailored splints to immobilize and protect the affected area following surgery.
- Carpal Tunnel / Tendonitis / Arthritis Splints — targeted support and relief for improved comfort and functionality.
- Hinged Elbow, Wrist & Digit Braces — adjustable support and range-of-motion control during recovery.
- Dynamic / Static-Progressive Mobilization Splinting — promoting joint mobilization and tissue healing.
- Serial Casting for Contracture Reduction — gradually improving joint flexibility and overall mobility.
What Fabrication Actually Involves
A custom orthosis is made from low-temperature thermoplastic, heated until it is pliable, then moulded directly to your arm and held while it sets. The whole process happens during your appointment — you leave wearing it, rather than waiting for something to be ordered in.
The skill is not in the moulding. It is in deciding what position the joint should be held in, which structures need immobilising and which must be left free, and how much correction the tissue will tolerate today rather than in a fortnight. Those decisions come from knowing the surgical protocol and the healing timeline, which is why we fabricate rather than outsource.
Custom Versus Off-the-Shelf
A pharmacy brace is built to fit an average arm. Slightly too tight and it causes pressure points or irritates a nerve; slightly too loose and it does not protect the tissue it is meant to be protecting. Held at the wrong angle, it can quietly make recovery harder — a wrist supported in extension is comfortable and, after some injuries, exactly the position you do not want.
There is a place for off-the-shelf supports, and we will say so when one is adequate. But for post-surgical protection, contracture work or any condition where joint angle matters, a moulded orthosis is doing a different job.
Adjusted as You Heal
A splint that fitted perfectly three weeks ago may not fit now. Swelling settles, motion returns, and a device that no longer matches the limb underneath stops being useful — and starts rubbing. Because we make them here, we can reheat and remould at a follow-up visit in a few minutes rather than sending you elsewhere.
For serial casting and static-progressive work this is the entire method: small, incremental changes to the angle at each visit, letting the tissue lengthen gradually rather than forcing it.
Splinting Is Part of the Programme
An orthosis on its own does not rehabilitate anything. Everyone who comes to our Hauppauge or Smithtown office for splinting also receives a full evaluation and, where appropriate, a complete therapy programme. The splint protects; the therapy restores. Patients travel to us from across Suffolk County and Long Island specifically because both happen in the same room.
